The Bavarian bass Andreas Hörl studied with Kurt Moll at the Cologne University of Music and furthered his training in masterclasses with Mechthild Gessendorf, Reinhard Leisenheimer, Jan-Hendrik Rootering, Harald Stamm, and Hermann Winkler. In 1999, he was admitted to the International Opera Studio of the Hamburg State Opera, marking the beginning of his professional career. He recorded early roles including the Hermit in Der Freischütz for WDR under Bruno Weil and participated in Königskinder with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin under Ingo Metzmacher.

Mr. Hörl was a member of the ensemble at the Hamburg State Opera from 2001 to 2005, followed by two seasons at the Cologne Opera. He made early debuts in leading bass roles such as Baron Ochs (Der Rosenkavalier) in Bremerhaven (2004) and the Landgrave (Tannhäuser) in Minden (2005). Between 2007 and 2012, he joined the ensemble at the Opernhaus Zürich, where he appeared in productions including La Bohème with Jonas Kaufmann and Barbara Frittoli, Le Cid with José Cura, and Don Giovanni with Anna Netrebko. From 2012 to 2014, he was engaged at the Wiener Staatsoper, singing roles such as Sarastro, Titurel, the Commendatore, Warlaam, and the Badger and Priest in Das schlaue Füchslein.

Since 2015, Mr. Hörl has worked as a freelance artist. He made his Bayreuth Festival debut as Fafner (Das Rheingold and Siegfried) under Kirill Petrenko in Frank Castorf’s Ring des Nibelungen. That same year, he performed Titurel in Parsifal für Kinder. He debuted at Teatro alla Scala as the First Apprentice in Wozzeck under Ingo Metzmacher and appeared as King Marke (Tristan und Isolde) at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma under Daniele Gatti. He has since returned to Bayreuth in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Der Ring des Nibelungen, and performed in a televised Ring cycle in Odense with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Hörl’s operatic repertoire includes Sarastro, Osmin, Baron Ochs, King Marke, King Heinrich, Hagen, Warlaam, Ramfis, Kaspar, and the Hermit, among many others. A proponent of contemporary and 20th-century music, he has also performed works by Henze, Hartmann, Eötvös, and Berio. His concert repertoire encompasses major sacred works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Verdi, and Rossini.

He has collaborated with numerous distinguished conductors, including Claudio Abbado, who invited him to perform Tristan und Isolde with the Berlin Philharmonic at the Salzburg Easter Festival and subsequently in Tokyo. Recent and upcoming performances include Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) and Hans Schwarz (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg).
