Estonian bass-baritone Raiko Raalik’s career is rooted in two opera companies in Estonia: Estonian National Opera in Tallinn, where he has been a soloist since 2018, and Vanemuine Theatre in Tartu. Across these two stages, Mozart and French opera sit alongside a sustained involvement in Estonian works. His portrayals of Golaud in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande in Tallinn and the title character in Eino Tamberg’s Cyrano de Bergerac at Vanemuine earned him the Annual Estonian Theatre Award in 2024.
That engagement with Estonian opera continues in his recent work. In 2026, Mr. Raalik sang the title role in the premiere production of Tõnis Kaumann’s Charon. His concert repertoire follows a similar course, bringing Artur Kapp’s Hiiob (Job) alongside Mozart’s Requiem in performances with Eesti Kontsert. He has also sung the bass solo in Stravinsky’s Pulcinella at Estonian National Opera; Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Pärnu City Orchestra is scheduled for March 2027.
Mozart has been a constant in his stage work, from Figaro and the Speaker in Die Zauberflöte in Tallinn to Leporello at Vanemuine, a portrayal that brought an Estonian Theatre Award nomination in 2023. At the Saaremaa Opera Festival, he sang Papageno in 2024. His comic repertoire also includes Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore, while Golaud, Méphistophélès in La damnation de Faust and Escamillo in Carmen reflect his work in French opera. Recent Tallinn roles include Harašta in The Cunning Little Vixen and Swallow in Peter Grimes. Guest engagements have also taken him to Germany’s Immling Festival.
Mr. Raalik’s association with Estonian National Opera began with a scholarship in 2017/18, before he joined its soloists in autumn 2018. He won the Vello Jürna Singing Competition in 2020, with additional prizes from PromFest, Eesti Kontsert and Vanemuine Theatre, and received the Italian Aria Prize at Immling that year. Earlier distinctions include the Naan Põld Award in 2019 and third prize and the Estonian National Opera Special Prize at the 2017 PLMF Vocal Contest.
Mr. Raalik studied with Taisto Noor at the Heino Eller Music School and with Taavi Tampuu at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Further training included masterclasses with Caroline Dowdle, Jaakko Ryhänen, Kamal Khan, Janet Williams and Dale Fundling.
