Gabriel Fortunas

The German bass Gabriel Fortunas is currently an Emerging Artist at the Mascarade Opera Studio in Florence. Guest engagements have taken him to leading German stages, including the Bayerische Staatsoper, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Theater Heidelberg, and the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg.

Mr. Fortunas studied voice at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart, where he completed both his Bachelor and Master degrees under Teru Yoshihara and Bernhard Epstein. During his studies, he appeared in a variety of stage productions at the university, including Rigoletto, Street Scene, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, La Wally, and Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor, as well as several projects of the Studio für Neue Musik. He has also participated in masterclasses with Margreet Honig, Elly Ameling, Sherman Lowe, and others.

In recent seasons, Mr. Fortunas has performed Farfallo in Die schweigsame Frau at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (2023), Dr. Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro at Kammeroper München (2022) and Theater Heilbronn (2023), and Capellio in I Capuleti e i Montecchi with Kammeroper Weißenhorn (2023). He made his debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper during the 2022 Münchner Opernfestspiele in Capriccio, and sang Sarastro and the Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte at Stadttheater Bad Hall (2023). His 2024 engagements include appearances at Theater Heidelberg (Macbeth), the Opernfestspiele Heidenheim (Alzira), and concerts in Florence at the Teatro della Pergola. In 2025, he will make his debut at Mainfranken Theater Würzburg as Zuniga in Carmen.

Earlier engagements include roles with Junge Oper Baden-Württemberg, Opera Laiblin, and Kammeroper Weißenhorn, where he sang roles such as Il Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Dottore (La traviata), and the Eremit (Der Freischütz).

Mr. Fortunas is a recipient of scholarships from the Hermann Haake Foundation and the Yehudi Menuhin – Live Music Now Foundation. He is also a prizewinner of the August Everding Singing Competition (3rd Prize, 2022), the Lions Club Competition Stuttgart Mitte (3rd Prize, 2022), and the Bundeswettbewerb Gesang (2nd Prize, 2014, Jugend musiziert).
