Günther Groissböck
Austrian bass Günther Groissböck has established himself as one of the most sought-after singers of his time. Günther regularly performs major roles on stages such as Wiener Staatsoper, the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opéra national de Paris, Teatro alla Scala, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Bayerische Staatsoper, Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Berlin, Arena di Verona and Bayreuther Festspiele. He regularly collaborates with conductors including Zubin Mehta, Christian Thielemann, Kirill Petrenko, Andris Nelsons, Sir Antonio Pappano and Philippe Jordan. With a particular affinity for art song, Günther’s concerts have brought him to halls including the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the philharmonic halls in Munich and Berlin, and the Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, performing frequently with pianists Julius Drake and Malcolm Martineau.
Recent highlights include Hermann in Tannhäuser at Wiener Staatsoper and Bayreuther Festspiele; König Marke in Tristan und Isolde and Gurnemanz Parsifal at Deutsche Oper Berlin; Marke in Tristan und Isolde at Bayreuther Festspiele; Veit Pogner in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Gurnemanz in Parsifal, Orest in Elektra, Colline in La bohème, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, König Marke in Tristan und Isolde, Heinrich der Vogler in Lohengrin, Baron Ochs in Der Rosenkavalier, Papst Pius IV in Palestrina and Peneios in Daphne at Wiener Staatsoper.
He also sang the roles of Baron Ochs in Der Rosenkavalier and Hunding in Die Walküre at Teatro alla Scala, Heinrich der Vogler in Lohengrin at Staatsoper Berlin and Gran Teatre del Liceu, and Baron Ochs in Der Rosenkavalier at Staatsoper Berlin.
On the concert stage, he recently sang Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 with the Gewandhausorchester and Andris Nelsons in Leipzig, a Mozart, Widor and Bruckner concert with the Slovak Philharmonic and Stefan Vladar; the role of Boris Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Andris Nelsons at Carnegie Hall and Boston Symphony Hall; Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Vienna Philharmonic and Riccardo Muti; and presented recitals at the Wiener Musikverein, Wigmore Hall and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.
He also directed Theater an der Wien’s 2021 production of Tristan Experiment, as well as Klosterneuburg Opera’s Don Carlo in 2023.

Günther’s extensive discography includes his recent album Nicht Wiedersehen! (awarded a Choc de Classica), recorded in collaboration with Malcolm Martineau, as well as an album of traditional Viennese Songs with the Philharmonia Schrammeln. With Gerold Huber he recorded the double album Winterreise/ Schwanengesang, and Herz-Tod with works by Brahms, Wagner, Wolf and Mahler. His new Lied album Männerliebe und -leben with Malcom Martineau includes songs and cycles by Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms, and was released in the spring of 2024 by Gramola /Naxos international.
