American tenor Sahel Salam holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Performance in Opera Studies from the Royal College of Music in London. From 2019 to 2023, he was a Resident Artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, where he completed an Artist Diploma. His further training has included the Cafritz Young Artist Studio of Washington National Opera, the Glimmerglass Festival, The Santa Fe Opera, the Merola Opera Program, the Music Academy of the West and the Jerwood Young Artist Programme of Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Mr. Salam continues his vocal studies with Bill Schuman.
Mr. Salam has been a member of the ensemble of Theater Freiburg since the 2025/26 season. In 2026/27, he returns in the title role of Massenet’s Werther and appears as Alfredo Germont in La traviata, Cinderella’s Prince in Into the Woods, and in The Last Days and The Shell Trial. During the 2025/26 season, he made his company debut as Oronte in Alcina, followed by the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto, Pylade in Iphigénie en Tauride and Werther.
In 2025, Mr. Salam covered Tom Rakewell in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress at the Glimmerglass Festival. From 2023 to 2025, he was a member of the Cafritz Young Artist Studio at Washington National Opera, where he appeared as Jaquino in Fidelio, Pang in Turandot and Tybalt in Roméo et Juliette, and covered Roméo. In 2024, he covered Alfredo Germont in La traviata and the Italian Singer in Der Rosenkavalier at The Santa Fe Opera. He made his Cincinnati Opera debut in 2023 as Lord Arturo Bucklaw in Lucia di Lammermoor. Earlier engagements include Ernesto in Don Pasquale, Rodolfo in La bohème and Fernand in La favorite at the Academy of Vocal Arts, as well as Tamino in Die Zauberflötewith the Merola Opera Program.
Mr. Salam was a National Grand Finalist in the 2023 Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition and received first prize at the 2022 Mario Lanza Competition. In 2021, he was awarded the Audience Prize at the Giargiari Bel Canto Competition. He is represented by Kanttila Management.
