Joel Allison

Acclaimed for his “rich, ringing tone” (Ludwig Van Toronto) and “expressive voice… and excellent interpretation” (Pro Opera), Canadian bass-baritone Joel Allison is a distinguished ensemble member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he has performed nearly 30 roles across a broad repertoire, ranging from Mozart and Wagner to Verdi, Puccini, and contemporary works. In the 2025–26 season, Mr. Allison returns to the house for upcoming role debuts as Angelotti (Tosca) and Colline (La Bohème), alongside revivals of Escamillo (Carmen), Vater (Hänsel und Gretel), Fritz Kothner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), and Pizarro (Fidelio). In the 2024-25 season, he made house debuts with Oper Frankfurt (Le Postillion de Longumeau) and the Palermo Classica Festival (Don Giovanni), and appeared with Oper Leipzig in Il Viaggio a Reims.

Highlights of the 2023–24 season included returns to the Canadian Opera Company as Masetto and the Forester (The Cunning Little Vixen), and debuts with Opéra National de Bordeaux, Tiroler Festspiele Erl, and the Royal Opera House Muscat. At Deutsche Oper Berlin, he added roles such as Sacristan (Tosca) and appeared in productions of Tannhäuser, Don Carlo, Les Vêpres Siciliennes, and Rigoletto.

Mr. Allison has participated in world premieres at the Salzburg Festival and the Canadian Opera Company, and has regularly appeared in concert repertoire across Canada, performing with ensembles such as the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Tafelmusik, Theatre of Early Music, and the Toronto Bach Festival. In Berlin, he was featured in a staged St. Matthew Passion conducted by Alessandro De Marchi.

His discography includes Meyerbeer’s Robert le diable (CD, Opéra National de Bordeaux) and DVD releases from Deutsche Oper Berlin on Naxos, including Das Rheingold, Der Schatzgräber, Intermezzo, and Antikrist. He has collaborated with conductors such as Sir Donald Runnicles, Marc Minkowski, Speranza Scappucci, Marc Albrecht, and Johannes Debus, and appeared in productions by Christoph Loy, Benedikt von Peter, Oliver Py, and Amy Lane.

Mr. Allison is a graduate of the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio and the Salzburg Festival’s Young Singers Project. He holds a Master of Music in Opera Performance from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Ottawa (magna cum laude). In 2020, he was a semi-finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
