Sangmin Lee

South Korean baritone Sangmin Lee studied voice at Yonsei University in Seoul before completing his postgraduate studies at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden. During his time in Germany, he joined the Opernstudio of the Semperoper Dresden, where he gained early stage experience, and subsequently became a full ensemble member in 2007. That same year, he was awarded first prize at the Competizione dell’Opera in Dresden.

From 2007 to 2012, Mr. Lee was a member of the ensemble at the Semperoper Dresden, performing roles including Conte Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro), Ford (Falstaff), Marcello (La Bohème), and Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia). He joined the ensemble of Theater Dortmund in 2012, where his repertoire expanded to include leading roles such as Conte di Luna (Il trovatore), Rodrigo (Don Carlo), Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Germont (La Traviata), and title roles in Nabucco and Eugene Onegin.

Since 2018, Mr. Lee has been a member of the ensemble at the Staatstheater Nürnberg, where his performances have included Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), Friedrich von Telramund (Lohengrin), and Golaud (Pelléas et Mélisande). In the 2024/25 season, he will return to the house in new productions as Escamillo in Carmen and in the title role of Macbeth.

As a guest artist, Mr. Lee has appeared at several major houses across Europe and Asia, including the Vienna State Opera (Germont), National Theatre Prague (Germont), Polish National Opera (Duca di Nottingham), and Deutsche Oper am Rhein (Rigoletto).

Mr. Lee is a past winner of the 2007 Competizione dell’Opera in Dresden.
