The artist
Korean tenor Andrea Shin’s international career spans Europe, North America and Asia, with Calaf in Puccini’s Turandot central to his repertoire. He has sung the role at Oper Dortmund, Staatstheater Darmstadt, Opera Hong Kong and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. His 2026 engagements include Calaf at Oper Köln, Opéra de Montréal and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, where he also sings Manrico in Verdi’s Il trovatore. In 2027, he is scheduled to return there as Manrico and to sing Don Carlos in the French version of Verdi’s opera at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari.
Verdi's works have occupied a central place in Mr. Shin's recent repertoire. In 2025, he appeared as Don Carlo at the Finnish National Opera and Manrico in Il trovatore with Ente Luglio Musicale Trapanese, alongside a return to the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe as Radamès in Aida, a role he had previously performed there in 2022 and 2023. His engagements at Oper Leipzig have meanwhile encompassed Pollione in Bellini's Norma, Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca, and Don José in Bizet's Carmen. Other recent appearances include the title role in Gounod's Faust at the Daegu Opera House, Alfredo in La traviata with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.
An important milestone in Mr. Shin's career came in 2018 with his debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York as Roméo in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette. He had previously been engaged by the company during the 2016/17 season as a cover for Roméo, Rodolfo, and the Duke of Mantua. His earlier guest engagements also brought him to the Staatsoper Stuttgart as Cavaradossi and Pinkerton, while his longstanding relationship with Oper Dortmund included performances as Calaf in Turandot and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly. In 2020, he also appeared as Alvaro in La forza del destino at the Daegu International Opera Festival.
Before establishing himself as a freelance artist, Mr. Shin was a member of the ensemble at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe from 2011 to 2015, where he performed a wide range of roles, including Rodolfo (La bohème), Alfredo (La traviata), Cavaradossi (Tosca), Don José (Carmen), King Gustav (Un ballo in maschera), and Grigory (Boris Godunov). He subsequently joined the ensemble at the Staatsoper Hannover for the 2015/16 season, appearing in roles including the title role in Massenet's Werther and the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto.
Mr. Shin studied voice in Seoul, Novara, at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, the Prayner Conservatory in Vienna, and at the Accademia Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He is a prizewinner at several international competitions, including the “Voci Verdiane” competition and the Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna.
