Günther Groissböck

Austrian bass Günther Groissböck has established himself as one of the most sought-after singers of his time, regularly performing major roles on stages such as Wiener Staatsoper, the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opéra national de Paris, Teatro alla Scala, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Bayerische Staatsoper, Semperoper Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Berlin, Arena di Verona and Bayreuther Festspiele. Frequent collaborations have included working with conductors including Zubin Mehta, Christian Thielemann, Kirill Petrenko, Andris Nelsons, Sir Antonio Pappano and Philippe Jordan. Mr. Groissböck studied voice at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien with Robert Holl and José van Dam. In addition to his work as a singer, he has also developed projects as a director, creating Theater an der Wien’s Tristan Experiment in 2021 and Don Carlo for Oper Klosterneuburg in 2023.

In recent seasons Mr. Groissböck has appeared as Hermann in Tannhäuser at the Wiener Staatsoper and the Bayreuther Festspiele, König Marke in Tristan und Isolde and Gurnemanz in Parsifal at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, as well as Marke at Bayreuth. Further appearances at the Wiener Staatsoper have included Veit Pogner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Orest (Elektra), Colline (La bohème), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Heinrich der Vogler (Lohengrin), Baron Ochs (Der Rosenkavalier), Papst Pius IV (Palestrina) and Peneios (Daphne). He has also sung Baron Ochs and Hunding (Die Walküre) at Teatro alla Scala, Heinrich der Vogler in Lohengrin at Staatsoper Berlin and the Gran Teatre del Liceu, and Baron Ochs at Staatsoper Berlin.

In concert, Mr. Groissböck recently sang Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 with the Gewandhausorchester under Andris Nelsons in Leipzig, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Vienna Philharmonic and Riccardo Muti, and Boris in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Andris Nelsons at Carnegie Hall and Boston Symphony Hall. He has also appeared with the Slovak Philharmonic under Stefan Vladar, and has given recitals at the Wiener Musikverein, Wigmore Hall and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. His longstanding partnerships with Julius Drake and Malcolm Martineau have brought him to major Lied venues including the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Leipzig Gewandhaus and Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.

Upcoming engagements for the 2024/25 season include Hagen in Götterdämmerung at the Wiener Staatsoper and Teatro alla Scala, Hunding in Die Walküre at the Wiener Staatsoper and Opéra national de Paris, König Marke in Tristan und Isolde at the Bayreuther Festspiele, Baron Ochs in Der Rosenkavalier at Opernhaus Zürich, Kecal in Prodaná nevesta at Teatro Real de Madrid, and Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte at the Wiener Staatsoper. In addition, he will appear in concert and recital at the Musikverein Wien, Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, Wiener Staatsoper and Landestheater Linz.

Mr. Groissböck’s discography includes Nicht Wiedersehen! with Malcolm Martineau, which received a Choc de Classica, as well as Winterreise/Schwanengesang and Herz-Tod with Gerold Huber. Further releases include Wiener Lieder with the Philharmonia Schrammeln and Männerliebe und -leben with Malcolm Martineau, featuring works by Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms, released in 2024 on Gramola / Naxos International.
