Suvi Väyrynen

Finnish soprano Suvi Väyrynen has appeared with leading opera companies and orchestras in Finland and abroad. A former ensemble member of both the Finnish National Opera and Tampere Opera, she has performed roles such as the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte (Estonian National Opera 2022/23, Tampere Opera 2022), Adele in Die Fledermaus (Finnish National Opera 2016/17), and Despina in Così fan tutte (Finnish National Opera 2018). Other notable engagements include appearances at the Savonlinna Opera Festival as Masha and Chloe in The Queen of Spades (2018), as well as performances with Joensuu Opera, Vaasa Baroque, and Eurajoki Bel Canto in repertoire ranging from Donizetti to Wagner.

Ms. Väyrynen studied at the Tampere University of Applied Sciences, graduating with distinction as a Music Pedagogue in 2013. She continued her studies in Vienna at the Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien, where she earned her Master’s degree in Solo Singing under Uta Schwabe in 2020. During her time in Vienna, she also focused on Lied interpretation with Birgid Steinberger and Carolyn Hague.

In recent seasons, Ms. Väyrynen has expanded her repertoire across both classical and contemporary works. She sang the role of Onni in the world premiere of Olli Kortekangas’s Veljeni vartija (Tampere Opera 2018), and has performed regularly in concert settings, including Bach’s Mass in B Minor (Jyväskylä Sinfonia, 2021), Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 (Sinfonia Lahti, 2021), and multiple Requiem settings by composers such as Kokkonen, Kostiainen, and Tammelin. She has recorded both Kokkonen’s and Kostiainen’s Requiem, with releases on Toccata Classics and Alba Records.

Her early career included appearances in roles such as Musetta in La Bohème (Tampere Opera 2019), Frasquita in Carmen (Tampere Opera 2020), and Alcina in Handel’s Alcina (Vaasa Baroque 2017). In addition to her stage work, she has been active in multimedia and cross-disciplinary projects, including a BBC4 documentary on Vienna.

Ms. Väyrynen is the recipient of the First Prize in the 2016 Lappeenranta Singing Competition (Female Category), and has been recognized at the Fidelio-Wettbewerb in Vienna (2015) and the International Hilde Zadek Singing Competition (Finalist, 2015).
